Collections Relocation
In 2011, the Department of the Interior contracted ELY, Inc. to remove, transport and store 14 dioramas created in the 1930s. Due to asbestos content, the dioramas were considered to be Hazardous Material and required special handling per OSHA regulations. While the smaller ones were able to be taken out of the building through existing doorways, ELY extracted the 7 largest, ranging from 300–600 pounds and averaging 8 feet wide by 8 feet tall by 5 feet deep, through the construction zone via a lifting rig and an opening in the wall. ELY then transported, inventoried and placed all of the dioramas in a secure vault.
